SUMMARY:Networking entrepreneurs: theory and evidence from a Pan-African RCT
DESCRIPTION:Fernando Vega-Redondo\n(UC3M)\n  \n«Networking entrepreneurs: theory and evidence from a Pan-African RCT»\n\nABSTRACT: Can peer interaction foster entrepreneurship and innovation\, even in large-scale environments? This question\, which has substantial economic implications\, is studied both empirically and theoretically. For the empirical part of the analysis\, we have conducted an RCT involving almost 5\,000 entrepreneurs from 49 African countries\, where the treatment provides the possibility of interacting with peers in alternative ways/arms: face-to-face or virtually (i.e. with more or less «band width»)\, and under different degrees of diversity (local\, national\, or international). Two are the main findings: (a) There is a non-monotonic trade-off between peer diversity and band width: whereas interaction with low band width (i.e. virtual) requires high enough diversity to be effective\, too much of it is detrimental. (b) Even when interaction is ineffective\, network peer effects are always positive and strongly significant. While (a) suggests that some intermediate degree of peer diversity is needed for scalable interaction (only feasible if implemented virtually)\, (b) points to an apparent paradox: ineffective interaction is not due to weak peer influence. To shed light on this evidence\, we develop a theory that is consistent with it and distinguishes between «constructive» and «disruptive» settings\, depending on how positive and negative peer stimuli compare. When these notions are operationalized\, we revisit the data and find that\, as the theory predicts\, only virtual interaction among peers of moderate diversity (same nationality) qualifies as constructive. \n\nFace-to-face seminar – Room 15.1.39

SUMMARY:Overcoming empathy failures to reduce inequality: Experimental evidence from Colombia
DESCRIPTION:Sandra Polanía-Reyes\n(University of Navarra)\n  \n«Overcoming empathy failures to reduce inequality: Experimental evidence from Colombia»\n\n\nABSTRACT\n\nIn recent years\, Latin America and the Caribbean has faced a wave of six million migrants from Venezuela\, three million of them entering Colombia. The migration crisis adds to the demographic shock stemming from internally displaced people (IDPs)\, former FARC combatants and paramilitaries rejoining civilian life. The urge to ensure basic welfare conditions for migrants is mediated by the challenge of integration into a society that sees them as outsiders.\n\nAlthough prosocial behavior is understood as key for development\, little is known about the role of prosocial behavior in the presence of conflict between groups and inequality. The effectiveness of prosocial behavior can be enhanced by three channels: ingroup member beliefs that outgroup members are willing and able to integrate\, reductions in prejudice or increases in empathy. We implement a lab-in-the-field experiment with a representative sample in the main Colombian regions to measure the benefit of two 5-minute media interventions on prosocial behavior (i.e. altruism\, trust\, and preferences for redistribution) towards four groups: Venezuelan migrants\, former combatants\, internally displaced people and the very poor.Unlike other similar edutainment interventions\, ours are grounded on social psychology theory and evidence. Thus\, the mechanism is not priming but actual information and learning to lower psychosocial barriers (beliefs\, prejudice and empathy). We show that exposure to the media interventions humanizes FARC ex-combatants and IDPs\, affecting both attitudes (e.g.\, support for inclusive policies) and prosocial behavior toward both groups. The robust effects of our intervention inform the policy design and thus accelerate the integration of the migrant population into their host communities. \n\n\n\n\nFace-to-face Seminar – Room 15.1.39

SUMMARY:Binary Response Dynamic Panel Data Models with Switching State Dependence
DESCRIPTION:Eleni Aristodemou\n(University of Cyprus)\n  \n«Binary Response Dynamic Panel Data Models with Switching State Dependence»\n\nAbstract:\nThis paper studies identification in binary response dynamic panel data models with switching state dependence. Departing from the standard approach of modelling binary response dynamic panel data models\, where last period’s choice enters as an additional regressor\, this paper allows for switching dependence where current period’s decision depends on whether this period’s choice differs from last period’s choice. This form of correlation causes inertia in individual choices and is suitable for modeling cases where individuals face some form of high \switching costs». This contemporaneous effect in choices\, where the choice an individual makes in the current period directly affects current period’s latent utility\, results in the model being logically inconsistent\, making the model both incomplete and incoherent\, which might result in lack of point-identification. \nFace-to-face Seminar – Room 15.1.39

SUMMARY:Trade Credit and Financial Amplification
DESCRIPTION:Luigi Bocola\n(Stanford)\n  \n«Trade Credit and Financial Amplification» (joint with G. Bornstein)\n\nIn most countries\, suppliers of intermediate goods are also the main providers of short term financing to their customers via trade credit contracts. This paper builds a model where these inter-firm financial linkages arise endogenously and uses it to understand how trade credit responds to financial shocks and affects their propagation. In the model\, trade credit is the outcome of a long-term contract between firms in a production line: downstream firms have incentives to repay their debt when the relationship with their supplier is valuable\, and the higher is the value of such relationship the more trade credit the pair can sustain. In addition\, production lines that can sustain more trade credit are better able to smooth the impact of financial shocks\, provided that suppliers have enough borrowing capacity themselves. Using Italian data\, we show that the model can rationalize the observed differences across industries in trade credit and in their performance during the Great Recession. \nFace-to-face Seminar – Room 15.1.39
